Laurence Fox is best known for his role as DS James Hathaway on the ITV murder mystery drama ‘Inspector Lewis’. Away from the small screen, the star was married to former ‘Doctor Who’ actress Billie Piper for nearly a decade and the pair have two sons Winston and Eugene together. But unearthed accounts reveal how drastically different their personalities appeared to be and how the star even joked that his then-wife would divorce him.
Laurence started dating Billie Piper in 2006 after the pair appeared in Christopher Hampton’s theatre production ‘Treats’.
By New Year’s Eve the following year they got married – despite difficulties for the star who was cautioned for assault after a clash with paparazzi photographers.
Away from their onscreen fame they savoured a quieter life and had Winston in 2008 and Eugene Pip four years later.
Laurence admitted that he and the ‘Doctor Who’ actress differed in their hobbies and that he preferred more sedate activities rather than wild parties.
During one “drunken bender” in Mexico, the pair got matching tattoos with each other’s names and their wedding date, a 2012 Telegraph article reported.
He described her as a “brilliant mother” and hinted that he was the complete antithesis.
When talking about their children, Laurence said: “Their mum is steady and sensible and will know how to guide them. I’m too manic, either really happy or really depressed.”
The star revealed that he needed more relaxation and solitary time than his wife, which he achieved through performing “melancholy, yet epic” songs and fishing.
Laurence added: “I can’t deal with crowds. I find it too much. I like being at home, looking at the robin in the garden.
“If I lived in a cul-de-sac, I’d be that person peeking through the curtains going, ‘Ooh, who’s that, then?’”
When asked if he was bothered by his wife being more famous than him he admitted that he “never” considered it in that way and would not describe himself as “the husband of Billie Piper”.
In 2014, he told the Telegraph: “I’ve never called myself that; it would sound weird.

“At Lewis, when I’m being naughty, they say, ‘Oh look, Mr Billie Piper’s being a d***!’ They know that will make my hackles rise.”
Laurence revealed that one of the ways he kept his wife happy was ensuring she had coffee from the “nearest decent café” every morning because she wouldn’t drink “the stuff” he brewed.
He admitted to making that “mile and a half” journey every day because she refused to have a coffee machine in the house.
The star quipped: “I suppose the day there’s a knock on the door and a huge Gaggia gets delivered, I’ll know that she’s got no more use for me and the marriage is over.”
The pair divorced in 2016 and four years later he revealed that they faced bitter and heated arguments toward the end of their relationship.
Laurence told The Sunday Times that he used to “shout ‘cut’ at the height” of their clashes, because he knew it “100 percent wound the f*** out of her”.
Since then he viewed not to argue with future partners and said: “You don’t need that in your house. You don’t need that s***.”
