Reader question: I’m wondering how the vendors who aren’t able to participate in this year’s Appleton farmer’s market are faring. In particular, I think about the egg roll stand. They are such a popular stand — always long lines, and they get to know their customers. There are such unique craft vendors there too.
Answer: Since my original May 12 story on the Downtown Appleton Farm Market ran saying just produce stands would be included, one change was made.
Hot food vendors can now participate in the market if they package food in sealed to-go containers. You, as a customer, are meant to take it home and eat it instead of eating it on the spot.
“The hot food is carry-out only,” said Jennifer Stephany, executive director of Appleton Downtown Inc., the nonprofit organization that operates the market. “At the corn vendor, for example, the corn is in a cup with lid on it as a takeout item.”
The egg roll stand you mentioned will also return and package egg rolls to go.
The hot food vendors who signed up to return are:
•ABC Pig Roast
•Acoca Coffee
•Aunty’s Cafe
•Burrit-bros, doing business as Feed the People
•Canada Roasted Corn
•Copper Rock Coffee Co.
•Delicious Asian Egg Rolls
•Egyptian Delights
•Los Tres Manantiales
•Mai’s Deli & Thai Ice Cream Rolls
•Mini Donuts and Slushies
•Mr. Taco
•On the Fritz Concessions
•Phenghoua Daily Foods
The market will not have craft booths or entertainment when it opens this year on July 4.
“The health department advised us, and they’re the ones who give us our license,” Stephany said. “They’re trying to cut down on the amount of lingering and gathering.”
The elimination of craft vendors will have an affect on those small businesses, and she hopes the situation will ease in the future.
“I’m still hopeful that there will be an opportunity to bring them in, but we’re waiting for the health department to advise us,” Stephany said.
One additional note: Stephany said staff and vendors at the farm market are required to wear face masks. The public is “strongly encouraged” to wear masks. Free masks will be available.
