One of the main characters on Gossip Girl was Dan Humphrey. He was a lonely boy, an outsider, and an aspiring writer from Brooklyn, but he was also in love with the it girl of the Upper East Side, a world he longed to join.

Just like everyone else in the story, Dan grew and matured into a better, more true version of himself. Here’s the many ways he evolved, and the ways he stayed the same.
10 Changed: Became Part Of The Upper East Side
As mentioned, Dan wanted to be part of this elite group, even though he acted like he was annoyed with and disgusted by his peers and their lifestyles. And after dating Serena van der Woodsen, he eventually became friends with her, Blair Waldorf, Nate Archibald and even Chuck Bass, making him part of their world.
He also went to school in this part of the city, and people started to actually recognize/acknowledge him. And then, his dad married Serena’s mom, making him, even more, a part of that dazzling place.
9 Same: Was A True Humphrey
Some of his story involved the struggle between wanting to be popular and accepted yet enjoying his quiet life and his tight-knit family. There were some fights between him, family members, and friends, but he was and would always be a true Humphrey.
The waffles, the board games, the artistic lifestyle, the decent traits such as being polite, grateful, and accepting… This was a pretty good group.
8 Changed: Became A Known Published Author
Dan always had interests in writing and reading, and he eventually became a published author. People knew his name and bought his book… and his friends were not cool with how they were portrayed in his story.
It may have not been the adventure he thought it was going to be, but it was certainly an impressive part of his story.
7 Same: Enjoyed Quiet Times Of Writing & Reading
While accomplishing that goal was huge (even if it did come with consequences), he still enjoyed his lonely, quiet times of writing and reading, too. Life on the Upper East Side was busy, filled with glamorous social functions, galas, and parties.

Even on into his old age, it would be easy to imagine this character liking to get away from everything, in order to work on his next book, blog, or return to some classic novels.
6 Changed: Betrayed His Loved Ones At Times
Rufus Humphrey raised Jenny and Dan to be good human beings, but that was just the thing: This group was made up of humans, who messed up now and then.
So, yes, Dan did and said things over the years that hurt his father, his pals, and the love of his life.
5 Same: Showed Them He Really Cared For Them
These main characters were beyond close, though, and even in the middle of the biggest arguments, they would drop everything to help one another. Time and time again, Dan showed them he really cared for them, and they returned the favor more than once. Just look at this image, and think about Dan’s relationships with Blair and Chuck… They came a long way!
4 Changed: Married The It Girl
At the beginning of the story, it seemed crazy that a guy like Dan would be able to snag a girl like Serena. They had a connection, though, they fell in love, and on the final episode of this teen drama TV show, they tied the knot!

Even though Dan went back and forth about whether or not he really belonged in this glam and privileged world, one thing was for sure: he had a huge crush on one certain person from that world. And he eventually won her over.
3 Same: Helped Her Be Her Best Version & Vice Versa
Part of what made this couple work was that they helped each other be their best selves. Before, Serena was into partying and being popular, but she could be her down-to-earth self with Dan. Furthermore, she inspired him to step out of his comfort zone and into the spotlight a bit.
2 Changed: Came Out As Gossip Girl
Oh, and then there was the time that Dan revealed he was Gossip Girl! That was quite a shock and a definite shift in the story, as everyone started piecing together what he had done and as his identity was no longer the big secret in town. Everything changed after that point.
1 Same: Was Still Loved By His Friends/Family
Yes, as this anonymous blogger, Dan had blasted out some deep and dirty things about everyone around him. But remember: they loved him, and vice versa, deep down. So through it all, he was still loved by his friends and family, and he still very much loved them, too.

From a tiny Texas town of 300, I made my way to the University of Texas at Austin to study journalism, which spurred me on to write for publications like New York’s Resident Magazine, Austin Home and Us Weekly and to cover events such as South by Southwest, Austin Film Festival and New York Fashion Week. Now, I have my own brand, and I’m able to create social media posts, press releases, news pitches and more. When I’m not writing, I’m probably playing with my cat, vacationing with my family or watching Netflix with my husband.
