Bloomfield has shifted some of its summer activities in the wake of coronavirus restrictions, including replacing its summer concert series with drive-in movies.
Mayor Michael Venezia said the township had to adjust to adhere to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines.
“Our Parks Department has done a great job putting together weekly drive-in movie nights […] as well as hosting virtual summer fitness classes,” Venezia said. “With the state slowly beginning to reopen, we hope that we will have more opportunities for recreation in the near future.”
Drive-in movie series
The township partnered with Universal Technical Institute, Shelbourne and Bloomfield College to provide drive-in movies for residents.
The movies began on June 16, starting with a showing of “Grease” at the Universal Technical Institute. Future movies include:
- June 23 – “Rocky” – Bloomfield College – 235 Liberty St.
- June 30 – “The Lion King” – Universal Technical Institute, 1515 Broad St.
- July 7 – “Lego Batman The Movie” – Bloomfield College – 235 Liberty St.
- July 14 – “Spaceballs” – Universal Technical Institute, 1515 Broad St.
Spaces are limited and residents must pre-register each Wednesday at 10 a.m. through the Community Pass registration portal on the Bloomfield Park Department’s website.

Summer camp
Gov. Phil Murphy released an executive order allowing recreational summer camps to open starting the second week in July, but Venezia said Bloomfield will not be able to do its full-day indoor summer camp program after having discussions with surrounding communities.
Instead, its recreation department is looking to create a hybrid of weekly sports clinics, in-person classes and virtual programs for children. The program is tentatively scheduled to begin July 6 and run until Aug. 7 all while adhering to CDC health and safety guidelines.
“It is important that Bloomfield families have adequate recreational opportunities in spite of COVID-19,” said Councilwoman Jenny Mundell, the liaison to the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. “We will continue to do everything in our power to put on great activities for residents this summer and I look forward to being able to resume normal operations when the crisis is over.”
The township hopes to begin registration on or around June 24. Updates can be found on the Bloomfield Parks Department website or their Facebook page.

Independence Day and civic band concerts
The annual July 4th celebration at Foley Field has been postponed. Tentatively scheduled for Sept. 12, the celebration includes entertainment, food, rides and fireworks.
The township’s civic band has performances tentatively scheduled for Monday nights at 7 p.m. July 6-27 while allowed by executive order. Performances will be held on the Historic Town Green.
