Adele Adkins shot to international superstardom with her debut album ‘19’, which featured the tracks including ‘Chasing Pavements’, that topped the UK charts. Her initial release earned her a Grammy Award for ‘Best New Artist’ and a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize. The London-born crooner had to quickly adapt to her newfound fame and learn lessons about how to behave as a celebrity. They included how to have fun with friends and unspoken rules about not getting “blackout drunk” in public.
Adele recently hit the headlines for her phenomenal weight loss transformation – after she reportedly lost seven stone from cutting down on booze, exercising and eating a predominantly raw diet.
The singer became internationally renowned in her late teenage years and was regularly compared to soulful songstress Amy Winehouse – who tragically died in 2011.
In a 2008 Independent article, she confessed to struggling not to fall into the “cesspool of VIP excess” and trappings of the lavish lifestyle that accompanied it.
The rising star lived with her mother Penny during that initial climb up the showbiz ladder but claimed that she wasn’t shielded or restricted from leading a normal life.
Adele said: “She trusts me not to be swept up by it all and go falling out of clubs with my a*** hanging out.
“I do go out but I don’t go to these celeb hangouts. I’ll have a party but I’ll have it at my mate’s house.
“I’ll get steaming drunk but at home. I won’t do it anywhere near where anyone can see me.”
During that time, Adele later admitted she was a “massive drinker” and claimed that her “self indulgence” was reflected on her album ‘21’.
In 2016, she told NME: “I can see from an outsider’s perspective that I will never write songs as good as the ones that are on ’21’.
“But I’m not as indulgent as I was then, and I don’t have time to fall apart like I did then.
“I was completely off my face writing that album, and a drunk tongue is an honest one.
“I would drink two bottles of wine, and I would chain-smoke. Then I’d write the lyrics down and the next morning think, ‘F***, that’s quite good’. Then I’d find the melody.”
The big change for Adele came after her son Angelo was born in 2012, during her relationship with Simon Konecki.

They were married from 2016 until last year after what was described as an amicable split – she has since been linked to London rapper Skepta.
Before their divorce, Adele said: “I used to love to be drunk, but as I got more famous I would wake up the next morning and think, ‘What the f*** did I say and who the fuck did I say it to?’
“I never had blackouts, but when you’re drunk and you go to a party, you’ll talk to anyone.
“But since I’ve had my baby, I’m not as carefree as I used to be. I’m scared of a lot of things now because I don’t want to die.
“I want to be around for my kid. I’m very cautious, whereas I was never cautious before.
“I don’t go out as much as I used to. I go to very civilised dinners, and I’ll go to work things when I have to, but you have to literally drag me onto a f***ing red carpet.”
