Kanye walks.
Kanye West is out with marchers in Chicago protesting the police-involved deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, Page Six can confirm.
NBC Chicago’s Trina Orlando tweeted footage of West, 42, on the city’s South Side, which, like many major US cities, has seen wave after wave of protests this week. The protest on June 4 was also rallying for the removal of the Chicago Police Department from the city’s public schools, “following the lead of Minneapolis,” a source told Page Six.
According to USA Today reporter Grace Hauck, West called protest organizers Wednesday, telling them he wanted to join a protest. However, Hauck quotes one protester, Taylore Norwood, 20, calling the march “a youth-led protest” and saying “she doesn’t want a ‘celebrity’ hijacking it.”
West had remained uncharacteristically quiet on current events until Thursday, when news broke that he’d set up a college fund for Floyd’s daughter Gianna and donated>$2 million to the families and legal teams supporting Floyd, Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, killed in Georgia in February by two white men while out jogging.
West’s wife Kim Kardashian waded into the fray herself earlier this week when she offered financial assistance to a young woman who sustained grisly injuries while protesting believed to have been caused by a rubber bullet fired by police.
Kanye and Kim have been supporters of President Trump and have worked with the president on criminal justice reform.
