A couple of free, drive-in movies will be presented by the Grand Forks Park District on Wednesday, June 10, at the Columbia Mall parking lot on the northwest side of Sears.
“Toy Story 4” begins at 5:30 p.m. and “Peanut Butter Falcon” at 8 p.m. on a large outdoor screen. The movie soundtrack will be run through an FM radio station, according to Lynn Roche, the park district’s recreation and special events manager.
The “Movie In the Park-ing Lot” event is a modified version of the traditional “Movie in the Park” offered on several evenings throughout the summer. The new location was chosen to comply with the governor’s directives regarding public gatherings in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Park district staff members are mindful of social distancing guidelines in their planning, Roche said.
“We’re thinking (vehicles spaced in) every other parking spot,” Roche said.

Attendees may bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit outside by their vehicle.
Event sponsors are Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Family Reality and the Ground Round restaurant.
In addition to boxed popcorn, the Ground Round will be on hand to provide, for purchase, a variety of meal choices, including burgers and pulled pork and grilled chicken sandwiches, as well as kids’ meals and assorted snacks and beverages.
“The screen is lit up bright so, even if it’s sunny, you’ll be able to see the movie,” Roche said.
Another movie night is being planned for June 25, also in the Sears parking lot, featuring the original “Lion King” and “Frozen 2.”
Locations and times for a few more outdoor movies in July and August are undetermined at this point and will depend on future pronouncements the governor may make relative to public gatherings.
The movie “Playing with Fire” is scheduled for July 9 and “Doolittle” for July 21.
The park district staff is looking forward to bringing the summertime, outdoor movie series back to the community, Roche said.
“It’s a first for us, so we’re very excited about it. It’s time to bring back a normal situation,” she said.
