National stores are slowly reopening here following two months of lock-up during the safer-at-home order.
But the financial impact of the pandemic closures has pushed some already struggling retailers to the brink.
Some will close stores permanently in the future, but have have yet to publish lists of locations on the chopping block.
Here’s what was known as of Friday morning:
Preparing to reopen shortly
Reopening Monday: Macy’s in the Fox River Mall, Marshalls and HomeGoods in Darboy and T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods in Grand Chute.
Macy’s
While Macy’s at the Fox River Mall reopens Monday, it faces larger issues. The company warned investors a week ago that it anticipates a $1 billion loss in the first quarter because of pandemic-related closures.
In February, prior to the outbreak, Macy’s had announced its plan to close 125 stores over three years. The Fox River Mall store has not appeared on closure lists to date and remains in operation.
J.C. Penney
J.C. Penney at the Fox River Mall has not yet publicized its reopening date. It was dark Thursday and its website still lists it as temporarily closed because of the pandemic.
The company has reopened a total of 304 stores around the country, but none in Wisconsin as of Thursday.
It will reopen more unspecified locations this upcoming week, a store spokesperson said in an email.
“We’ll make another announcement next week, when we’re scheduled to bring the total number of reopened stores up to 500 from approximately 300 this week,” spokeswoman Kristen Bennett told The Post-Crescent.
Penney’s filed for bankruptcy May 15 and said it will permanently close 242 of its 846 stores, about 29%, in fiscal 2020 and 2021. The company’s lawyers expect to identify those locations in a court filing next Thursday.
Pier 1 Imports
Pier 1 Imports filed for bankruptcy in February. Last week it said it will close all of its remaining stores, including the Grand Chute location at 4717 W. Michaels Drive.
As of Thursday, the store had not yet reopened following its pandemic shutdown and still had Easter merchandise in its windows. Information was not available on when it might start its going-out-of-business sale.
Tuesday Morning
While off-price store Tuesday Morning closed its Appleton store five years ago, it kept its branch open on W. Mason St. in Green Bay. Now that store will also close, according to the company’s bankruptcy filing Wednesday.
