The Manitoba Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Council have been helping Indigenous youth in Winnipeg in order to help them be more comfortable with the city. The Sport for Social Development grant was given to the council in order for them to help Aboriginal youth be more active, and healthy. “We looked at what barriers do Indigenous youth face here in Winnipeg, and we found that they just aren’t comfortable. They aren’t comfortable getting around with public transit, or just in the city at all. This gives them a bit more freedom to get to school or even just go to local parks, as well as encouraging a healthy lifestyle,” said Leah Ferguson.
