As performance venues struggle during the coronavirus pandemic shutdowns orders, some are getting creative with how they can still entertain, make money and make sure audience stay a safe distance from one another.
One such venue in our region is aiming to replace their historical live performances with another style of throwback entertainment: drive-in movies.
The Mount Hope Estate & Winery in Manheim, home of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, presented a proposal to the Rapho Township supervisors meeting on May 7. Their plan would be to convert their parking lot into a drive-in movie theater space, complete with a large outdoor screen and sound from the films broadcast on an FM radio station.
The proposal noted that audiences in separate cars would be able to maintain appropriate safe distance from one another during the films, and it was approved, according to Lancaster Online.

The estate was already licensed for live concert performances within the fairgrounds, according to a letter submitted to the township included in the May 7 meeting minutes. The proposed movie showings would take place between roughly 9 and 11 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
The proposal also notes plans for live concerts to be held during the week, which would be streamed live through the estate’s Crowdcast channel, as well as plans for expanding the drive-in movies once social distancing restrictions are relaxed.
