APPLETON – One of the prominent places to get a pure sugar rush is going away.

Crazy Sweet will close in downtown Appleton at the end of May. The corner candy shop has been at 201 W. College Ave., between Houdini Plaza and Cleo’s, since 2014.

Husband-and-wife owners Dale Ver Voort and Mary Kelley put the store up for sale last year and intended to operate it until a new owner could settle in. They wanted to retire and move near their children and grandchildren.

Ultimately, they found no takers.

“We had two accepted offers that fell through for financing reasons and three others interested enough to talk to the landlord, but no deal was ever made,” said Ver Voort.

He said that while the coronavirus has been tough on all businesses, it’s not the reason they’re closing.

“It’s just time to move on,” he said.

The shop has nostalgic candy from decades past, bulk chocolates and an attached ice cream parlor known for its Fro-Doughs, which were ice cream-filled donuts made to order.

The shop is open through May for curbside candy pick-up.
