Justice for Peeves!
The Harry Potter movies were basically my whole childhood. The films stay true to the spirit of the books, and they really bring the story to life. Plus, they introduced Emma Watson to the world, which we will forever be grateful for.

But my beef with the movies is they cut out SO MUCH detail. Of course, the films cannot cover EVERYTHING that the books do. But the movies do some characters dirty by cutting them from the story entirely. So let’s go back and recognize the characters who absolutely deserved to be in the movies.

1.
Teddy Lupin symbolizes a brighter future, and he should have been included in the “19 years later” scene.

The son of Remus and Tonks, Teddy represents the new generation who can grow up in a safer world thanks to the sacrifices of heroes like his parents. Plus, Harry is Teddy’s godfather. I would have loved to see Teddy included in the final scene of the movies with Harry giving words of advice or just some love to his godson the way that Sirius and Lupin did for him.

Charlie Weasley is a freakin’ WEASLEY. Of course he deserves to be in the movies!

Why in the name of Merlin did the movies cut this man? Sure, he shows up in the newspaper picture of the family’s trip to Egypt, but that’s it. Charlie is Ron’s brother so that’s reason alone to be included in the films. But Charlie’s also really interesting – he works with dragons in Romania! If that’s not cool, I don’t know what is.

Ariana Dumbledore is the reason why Albus Dumbledore turns into the man we know and love.

When I realized Ariana would appear in the movies just as the portrait, I was LIVID. Yes, a painting of her means she’s technically in the movie, but they totally gloss over her story! Her death is the reason why Dumbledore abandons his ambitions and set his heart on love and peace. Using a flashback to dive into Ariana’s past would have been a profound emotional moment.

Ludo Bagman is a fun character who would have brought some more playful vibes to the movies.

The former professional Quidditch player and head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports brings childlike enthusiasm to everything he does. It would have been so amusing to watch him parade around the World Cup in his old Wasp robes and commentate the match. Despite his questionable ethics and gambling issues, Ludo would have made quite the splash onscreen.

Peeves would have added some much-needed comic relief to the films.

Peeves’s pranking rampage after the Weasley twins order him to “give Umbridge hell” would have been cinematic gold. And who wouldn’t get a kick out watching the poltergeist drop Snargaluff pods on Death Eaters?

Winky’s story deserves to be told because it highlights the issue of house-elf enslavement.

Winky is the house-elf who cares for Barty Crouch Jr. after his mother switches places with him in Azkaban. Winky devotedly nurses him back to health until he’s strong enough to steal Harry’s wand and send up the Dark Mark. Watching her spiral after she’s set free would have underscored the perverse relationship between house-elves and wizards.

Merope Gaunt is crucial to understanding Voldemort’s backstory.

Even though Harry’s deep dive with Dumbledore into Voldemort’s history is absolutely critical to the story, Merope never even makes an appearance! The movies should obviously include Merope bewitching Muggle Tom Riddle. This drives home the idea that Voldemort is born out of a forced, empty obsession rather than love, which is something he can never understand.

Marvolo Gaunt should be called out for his blood purity obsession.

Voldemort’s grandfather Marvolo lives in squalor while believing he’s the best wizard on earth since he’s a descendent of Salazar Slytherin. He completely loses his shit when he discovers his daughter has a crush on a Muggle. It’s disappointing we couldn’t boo him in theatres.
9.
Professor Binns might be a ghost, but he’s still a Hogwarts professor dammit.

Sure, he’s the most boring of Harry’s teachers, but he still deserves to be in the movies. He’s the one who spills the tea on the Chamber of Secrets for goodness’ sake! And he’s the only ghost who works as a Hogwarts professor – that’s got to count for something.
10.
Marietta Edgecombe needs to be remembered as the snake she is.

Why do the movies completely erase Marietta Edgecombe?! She’s the one who snitches on the D.A., not Cho! I would have loved to see “sneak” written in pimples across her treacherous face.

Andromeda Tonks deserves some screen time as much as her sisters Bellatrix and Narcissa.

Anyone who gets blasted off the family tree for marrying a Muggle-born gets a gold star in my book. Andromeda offers her home as a safe house for Harry when he’s moved from Privet Drive. When she and her husband are tortured by Death Eaters, she refuses to give anything away. Her husband, daughter, and son-in-law all pass away in the fight for a better world, and the movies should have honored her loss.
12.
Dennis Creevey is a little sweetheart who just loves Harry.

The younger brother of sweet Colin Creevey, Dennis is a fellow Gryffindor who joins the D.A. and never wavers in his support of Harry. It would have made Colin’s death at the Battle of Hogwarts more poignant if viewers could have spent time with Dennis, too.
13.
Frank and Alice Longbottom lose their sanity while being tortured. They fully deserve to be recognized in the movies.

Neville’s parents are tortured so badly that they permanently move into St Mungo’s. Harry and the squad meet them in the hospital where he notes that Alice’s face looks nothing like the old pictures he’s seen (I’m not crying, you’re crying.) It would have been a profound moment to watch Neville tell his friends about his parents’s sacrifice.
14.
Augusta Longbottom is a formidable witch who would have made a badass addition to the strong women in the films.

When Dawlish tries to kidnap Augusta, she puts up such a fight that he’s sent to St Mungo’s. Though she seems a bit harsh on Neville growing up, I would have loved to watch her join the Battle of Hogwarts in her famous vulture hat, bursting with pride over the bravery of her grandson.
15.
Hepzibah Smith is the owner of Hufflepuff’s cup and Slytherin’s locket, and that makes her 100% essential to the story.

Hepzibah is such a fun character: a wealthy cougar who loves flirting with handsome young men and collecting cool knickknacks. Voldemort murders the woman, steals her two most valuable possessions, and turns them into Horcruxes. Can someone please explain to me why this scene isn’t in the movies?
16.
Hokey’s death further reveals the exploitation of house-elves.

The movies don’t even include S.P.E.W., let alone the intricate ways that house-elves are oppressed. Hokey is an essential character: she’s framed for poisoning Hepzibah’s cocoa, and it’s Hokey’s memory that reveals the treasures that’ll become Horcruxes. But the films also should have included her because, like Winky, her story demonstrates the mistreatment of house-elves.
17.
Bob Odgen is literally the reason why Voldemort exists.

Bob Odgen is the head of the Magical Law Enforcement Squad. When he arrives at the Gaunts’s house to summon Morfin to a Ministry hearing, Bob is attacked and returns with reinforcements. He puts Marvolo and Morfin in Azkaban, which frees Merope to coerce Muggle Tom Riddle into a relationship – thus, baby Voldemort.

The Muggle Prime Minister meeting Fudge would have made a way better opening scene for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince than Death Eaters randomly flying around and destroying a bridge.

The relationships between the Ministers of Magic and the Muggle Prime Ministers are fascinating to think about. I don’t know about you, but I loved getting a glimpse into J. K. Rowling’s world through this lens. It was a bummer not to see this small bridge between the Muggle world and the Wizarding one onscreen.
19.
Rodolphus Lestrange is kind of replaced by Voldemort as Bellatrix’s main man in the movies, but she is married y’all.

Rodolphus is Bellatrix’s husband. Though his wife seems to love Voldemort far more than him, they’re a good match in their dedication to the Dark Lord. Rodolphus joins his wife in torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom, and he participates in the major battles. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would have appreciated seeing their relationship on the big screen.
20.
And finally, Regulus Black absolutely should have been in the movies. He regrets following Voldemort and dies to make up for his actions.

Sure, Sirius’s brother Regulus makes a mistake by signing up for Voldemort’s service. But when the Dark Lord leaves Kreacher to die, Regulus realizes what a horrible person Voldemort is. It’s touching that his house-elf – a creature looked down upon by most wizards – is what brings Regulus back from the dark side. He sacrifices his life to destroy the Horcrux, and that would have been an epic flashback scene from Kreacher’s perspective.
