Coronavirus pandemic has put the world into pause mode. The fashion industry as many others will certainly evolve and will know a new way to interpret fashion. The next two quarters in 2020 will probably be without any physical fashion show; many fashion brands have already looked for new options, most probably digital. I chatted with Michel Gaubert, the famous sound designer, who is a public figure in the fashion shows. Born with a true love for music and a deep passion for fashion, he has definitely shaped the fashion sound industry since the 1980s. His fashion show highlights in his career are Fendi at the Colosseum in Rome, Chanel in Cuba, Louis Vuitton at the Miho Museum, Dior in Marrakech and Raf Simons in Chinatown in New York. A fashionable passionate man whose desire is to build a sonic image for fashion brands. Let’s travel in your mind through music with Michel. For now.
How do you live this lockdown period?
Up and down. I am home in Paris. I take the time to listen to the music I do not know and catch up with a lot of movies by directors that fascinate me. I also do a lot of things that I am not used to doing, which is fun like cooking for example.
Does this period have an impact on your creativity?
Of course, it helps to have a reflection on my work and what my work could be post lockdown. I am brainstorming a lot with myself and that is always a good sign. I definitely go deeper in my research and take more time to do it.
Could you define a specific music for this period?
I do not think there is a specific music for this. It just happens to be what you are listening to and what will remain in your memory from this time.
What would you like to do that you have never done before?
I would like to work in films, music and also acting. I have this fantasy and I think I could be good at it.
What are your projects after the lockdown?
Firstly, I will take time for myself and be outside a lot and then I will see how to apply my brainstorming to the situation. For the time being, nobody really knows what is going to happen and I believe it will be a step by step situation and we will need to adapt as we go along.
Could you share some of the tracks you are listening to during this lockdown to travel in your mind?
I am listening to tracks that I played in fashion shows this past season as they were meant for a present and future time. They still resonate in me.
