Prince Harry reached out to Thomas Markle, Meghan Markle‘s father, ahead of his 2018 wedding.
In advance of Meghan’s case against Associated Newspapers on Friday, the 35-year-old Duke of Sussex submitted text messages to London’s High Court which revealed his exchange with Thomas Markle, Reuters reported.
Meghan, 38, is suing Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Mail on Sunday tabloid, for invading her privacy by publishing portions of a letter she sent to her father ahead of the May 2018 royal nuptials.
“Tom, Harry again! Really need to speak to u. U do not need to apologize, we understand the circumstances but ‘going public’ will only make the situation worse,” one of Harry’s text messages read.
The Duke of Sussex then followed up with another message: “So please call me so I can explain. Meg and I are not angry, we just need to speak to u. Thanks. Oh any speaking to the press WILL backfire, trust me Tom. Only we can help u, as we have been trying from day 1.”
The messages were released just hours after the couple announced they were severing ties with various UK tabloids.
Meghan’s lawyers also claimed in the documents that tabloids such as the Mail harassed and humiliated her father, leading to their fall out. Her lawyers also claimed that the Mail misquoted the letter she sent to her father ahead of the wedding.
Meanwhile, Thomas defended releasing the private letter, saying in October that he had the right to stand up for himself.
Meghan and her father’s estrangement began after Thomas decided not to attend his daughter’s lavish wedding, citing a recent cardiac procedure as the reason for his absence. However, it was later revealed that he had staged paparazzi shoots in the days leading up to the wedding.
Thomas has since spoken out on various occasions against his daughter and Harry.
