Reader question: Everyone is home cleaning right now and there’s no place to donate stuff. I’ve called around and everyone’s closed. What should I do with this stuff? I don’t want to throw it in a landfill.

Answer: You’re going to have to hold on to the donations until these businesses reopen.

Goodwill NCW is one place that’s having a problem with “donation dumping” outside the doors of its closed donation centers.

It asks that people don’t do that.

“As people clean and organize homes, please remember we need donations – but not just yet,” Goodwill NCW President/CEO Chris Hess said in a letter to the community. “We will be back open soon and will appreciate that support as we anticipate the need to be even greater when we emerge from this temporary shutdown.”

Reader question: Wondering if you’ve heard of any paper shredders offering free services in the area or any businesses offering free paper shredding? With so many of us confined to our homes, we’re busy cleaning out file cabinets. It would be nice to be able to dispose of those items that require shredding.

Answer: Financial institutions typically offer free shredding around tax time. Check with your bank or credit union to see if it is offering the service. Some may be shifting the big shredding events from spring to summer. Fox Communities Credit Union, for example, does a large annual shredding and recycling event. This year, it’s scheduled for June 20 at the Timber Rattlers’ stadium in Grand Chute, according to its website.

Office supply stores are currently open as essential businesses, and some do paper shredding for a fee. Call stores in advance to see if shredding is offered right now. A check of a couple stores on on Monday show that Office Depot in Appleton is not offering shredding at this time. Office Max on the east side is still accepting paper for shredding at 99 cents a pound.
