Macy’s will temporarily close all of its stores by the end of the day today, Tuesday, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Macy’s has a store in the Fox River Mall, and it’s the first anchor or big box store to close because of the coronavirus.

Macy’s, Inc. will provide benefits and compensation to its impacted workforce, it said in a release Tuesday.

“The health and safety of our customers, colleagues and communities is our utmost priority,” said Jeff Gennette, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. “During this closure, we will continue to serve our customers through our e-commerce sites.”

The company said it plans to reopen stores March 31, but Gennette indicated that could change.

“We will work with government and health officials to assess when we will reopen our stores and safely bring our colleagues back to work.”
