NAACP Image Awards: Lizzo Named Entertainer Of The Year; ‘Just Mercy’, ‘Black-Ish’, ‘When They See Us’ Among Top Honorees – Full Winners List – Deadline

The 51st NAACP Image Awards were handed out tonight and were aired live on BET with trailblazing musician Lizzo bringing the “Juice” and taking the top honors for Entertainer of the Year and black-ish and When They See Us dominating the TV side and Just Mercy and Dolemite Is My Name taking trophies in the film categories.

Black-ish swept the TV awards with repeat wins for Outstanding Comedy Series and lead acting accolades for Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross. On top of that, Dion Cole and Marsai Martin walked away with wins for their supporting roles on the ABC sitcom.

In addition to her TV awards, Martin was named Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in Motion Picture for her role in Little.

Ava DuVernay’s critically acclaimed limited series When They See Us took home the award for Outstanding Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special while Jharrel Jerome and Niecy Nash won for their roles in the Netflix series about the Exonerated Five.

Just Mercy took the top prize on the feature side for Outstanding Motion Picture after being overlooked and shut out from awards season. The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film based on the book by Bryan Stevenson also tallied awards for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture as well as acting wins for stars Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx. Lupita Nyong’o won for her overlooked performance in Us.

Other feature winners include Angela Basset for her role in 9-1-1, Omari Hardwick for Power, OWN’s Greenleaf winning Outstanding Drama Series and the Eddie Murphy-fronted Netflix comedy Dolemite is My Name for Outstanding Independent Motion Picture.

The telecast paid tribute to the late basketball star Kobe Bryant, who passed away last month in a tragic helicopter accident. The stage was dressed with a basketball net with Bryant’s jersey’s flanked on each side as the audience listened to an audio recording of his farewell speech after his last NBA game at the Staples Center in 2016 when he uttered the famous line “what can I say? Mamba out.”

Civil rights leader John Lewis was given the NAACP Chairman’s Award and Musician, fashion icon, business entrepreneur and philanthropist, Rihanna was honored with the President’s Award and called for unity in the quest for equality.

“We can only fix this world together. We can’t do it divided. I cannot emphasize that enough,” said said. “We can’t let the de-sensitivity seep in.”
