Reader question: Wondering if there is something going in the old Piggly Wiggly building on Northland Avenue? There’s a big dumpster out front.
Answer: The building is still for lease or for sale, with an asking price of $1.8 million. The 30,000-square-foot building is at 520 E. Northland Ave.
The dumpster in front of the building was used for clean-up, said Jason Gallmeier, the real estate broker handling the building.
“The building is under new ownership, an investment firm out of California, and the new owner is motivated to sell or lease it,” he said.
Piggly Wiggly closed in that spot in August 2018. The comparatively small store ‒ it is about half the size of a typical grocery store ‒ closed because it wasn’t making the sales it needed to survive. It had a tough time with competitors drawing away its customers. Nearby places that sold groceries and household products included dollar stores, Walgreen’s, Kwik Trip, Pick ‘n Save and Meijer.

Readers suggested over the past year that the vacant building would be a perfect site for Aldi.
But Aldi is currently eyeing a different site not far away on Richmond Street south of the roundabout at Northland Avenue.
“We’ve done our market research and this is the area we want to pursue,” Tom Howald, director of real estate for Aldi’s Oak Creek Division, told The Post-Crescent last fall.

Meanwhile, Piggly Wiggly has ongoing stores in Menasha, Kaukauna and Little Chute.
