It’s time to break up with your biker shorts and dad sneakers.
There’s no better time to purge your closet and reinvent your style than the New Year. Here are five “felt cute, might delete later” trends to part ways with before the end of 2019 — and five to keep around in 2020.
Leave
Ugly sneakers
Good riddance to Instagram’s ugly footwear fetish. Although dad sneakers dominated the street style scene, they have hit their expiration date and we’re officially ready to say, “Thank u, next.” So, ditch the flashy sneakers for a more flattering silhouette.
Bike shorts
Sorry, not sorry. Say goodbye to these body-con bad boys as well — unless you’re actually headed to the gym.
Padded headbands
Soon after padded headbands were spotted on Prada’s spring 2019 runway, they made a regal entrance into the grids of Instagram’s most-followed. Admit it, you probably want to channel your inner Blair Waldorf and rock this trend. Don’t let temptation take over.
Tiny sunglasses
Dubbed the ultimate “cool girl accessory,” obnoxiously small shades have stuck around for long enough. This year, let’s make a pact to invest in cute sunglasses that actually do the job.
Transparent Bags
Almost as impractical as the mini bag (don’t worry, we aren’t bashing the micro bag!), see-through bags miss the mark. The clutch may be cute if you spend time curating what you place inside, but who has time for that? And more importantly, why are you imposing a lack of privacy?
Keep
Suiting
Whether you sport a blazer with jeans or go all out with a power pantsuit, suiting is a wardrobe staple for any girl boss. This trendy ensemble can take you from serious to sultry with savvy styling.
Animal print
While the cheetah midi skirt has definitely been overdone, we’re not ready to retire animal print as a whole just yet. Ring in the New Year by stocking up on every animal print from snake to zebra.
Puff sleeve
We’re still swooning over the puff-sleeve silhouette that gained traction over the summer. This romantic detail has the power to elevate any look.
Cardigans
Inspired by grandma’s style, but make it fashion. Novel knitwear and slouchy styles are comfy and cute — an obvious cold-weather trend that’s here to stay.
Monochromatic outfits
From winter whites to caramel and chocolate browns, neutrals are undeniably chic. Make your mark in 2020 with a major monochromatic moment.
