LONDON, United Kingdom — “Not enough is being done for workers to adjust to the rapid pace of change in the economy,” read a statement released in August 2019 by The Business Roundtable.
Do you agree? Take the BoF Fashion Employee Survey 2019.
In a significant break from previous years, the respected American institution made up of 180 chief executives of some of the United States’ most powerful commercial entities — including Target, Hearst, Walmart and Johnson & Johnson — recommended businesses pivot their commercial activities towards sustainable long-term growth rather than short-term profit.
To achieve this, it proposed that business leaders view shareholders, customers and employees as equally important stakeholders in their organisations — effectively ending shareholder primacy, the dominant operating principle for public companies of the past 50 years.
The organisation went on to make a commitment to investing in employees. “This starts with compensating them fairly and providing important benefits. It also includes supporting them through training and education that help develop new skills for a rapidly changing world. We foster diversity and inclusion, dignity and respect.”
But how are global fashion employers, large and small, creative and commercial, responding to the emerging needs of the modern business landscape?
