Reader question: What are they building at the north end of the WG&R property? Walls are going up.
Answer: That’s the coming REI store. It’s expected to open in the spring.
REI is a Seattle-based outdoor equipment company that sells new gear, has a rental program and offers adventure travel. It’s a consumer membership co-op, but sells to both members and non-members.
It will be the retailer’s third Wisconsin location after Brookfield and Madison.
The 20,500-square-foot store is at the northeast corner of West Wisconsin Avenue and Interstate 41, in a Grand Chute development that includes WG&R Furniture and At Home.
The REI store’s current building permit is for its footings, foundation and shell. It lists the estimated construction cost for those portions at $245,940.
Next, the store will get a permit for interior work.
“Their plans are approved, and they’re going to submit an application for the interior build out,” said Cary Nate, chief building inspector for the town.
Separately, along the Wisconsin Avenue side of the same development, Kwik Trip is underway at the corner of Westhill Boulevard.
