Reader question: I saw that the Chase on Northland, across from Pick ‘n Save, was discontinuing humans at the drive-through lanes. Done to cut costs?

Answer: Chase Bank will certainly save money by removing drive-up banking services at two of its Appleton branches.

It’s also closing its Valley Fair branch and downsizing its downtown site.

Spokesman Brian Hanover said the bank is constantly evaluating its branches, and it consolidates or changes services as needed.

“Sometimes we consolidate a branch when another is nearby or traffic is low,” he said.

“Banking is no longer a one-size-fits all approach. Our customers are rapidly adopting new technologies and innovations, such as mobile, online and in-branch technologies that allow them to bank how, where and when they want for everyday banking activities.” he said.

Here’s a rundown of current site changes at Chase branches in Appleton:

• The Valley Fair branch at 2127 S. Memorial Drive will close Nov. 5. Its employees will be placed “in other openings in the area,” Hanover said. “The branch will be put up for sale following its closure.”

• The drive-up at 2120 E. Northland Ave. will be closed as of Sunday. The bank branch at that site, east of Ballard Road, remains open.

• The downtown branch at 200 W. College Ave. is being renovated and downsized in the eastern portion of its building. Until that side is ready, the bank is currently open and operating in the western portion of the building. Behind the building, its drive-up lanes have closed. The entire property is for sale with the condition that the bank remains as a tenant. “We are still exploring sale/development options,” Hanover said.

•The eastside branch at 3505 E. Calumet St., at State 441, remains open and its drive-up lanes remain open.

• The Fox River Mall branch at 4401 W. Wisconsin Ave., in Grand Chute, remains open and its drive-up lanes remain open.
