Born and raised in Yokohama, Japan, New York–based model Anna Ling is an artist, photographer, and filmmaker who works part-time as a set designer. Relatively new to the modeling world, Anna hopes to help push the industry in a positive direction regarding sustainability, diversity, and inclusion while also encouraging people to follow their dreams and not compare themselves to others.
Why did you decide to pursue modeling?
I’ve been working behind the scenes in fashion photography for a few years now. Initially, when I was asked to model, I wasn’t very comfortable in my body, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve become more comfortable. When the opportunity arose to model professionally, I realized that I have a chance to contribute to an industry that is growing in a positive direction. In a way, modeling has been a healing journey for my younger self and a good way to remind myself that I’m valued and respected the way I am.
Beyond modeling, how do you hope to use your platform?
I hope to use my platform to inspire others to do what makes them happy, and to never compare themselves to others. I also think it’s important to show that we don’t have to be “on” all the time, whether that is in person or on social media. That is something I’ve been working on as well, to be more present and to recognize when I need moments of solace.
What are your thoughts on the current state of the fashion and beauty industry?
I am most concerned about the earth’s state of health. The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. I’d like to see more sustainable fashion companies come into development, with accessible designs for all body types and abilities. Hopefully one day beauty companies follow suit and incorporate more eco-friendly packaging to reduce waste.
What do you hope to achieve as a model?
I think the labels we use to categorize talent (gender/age/size/ethnicity) are a missed opportunity to show diversity and individuality of the collection as a whole. As a mixed-race model, I hope I can identify with many people with different backgrounds and show the beauty and complexity that comes with it.
