  • Robert Pattinson was interviewed for the first time since being cast as Batman by Variety.
  • Pattinson revealed an unintentional streak he’s got going: masturbation scenes in his films.
  • The Batman will be released in 2021.

Even though he might be best known for his role in the Twilight movies, Robert Pattinson has been on an impressive streak in the last decade, consistently picking exciting and challenging film projects, re-inventing himself as a versatile and unique character actor.

He’s also found himself on another impressive streak of late: masturbating on screen.

That’s right. In a new interview with Variety, the actor recently cast in the titular role of 2021’s The Batman revealed that a scene in his upcoming film The Lighthouse finds his character pleasuring himself while thinking about a mermaid figurine. “I keep masturbating,” he said. “In the last three or four movies, I’ve got a masturbation scene. I did it in High Life. I did it in Damsel. And The Devil All the Time. I only realized when I did it the fourth time. But when I saw the clay figure of the mermaid, if you’re getting turned on by that, you’re in a very strange place in your life.”

The fact that the only thing you probably know about any of those movies—High Life is a space drama, Damsel is a western, and The Devil All the Time is an upcoming thriller—is that Pattinson masturbates in them, well, that’s as strong a testament as ever that he’s totally re-invented himself as an indie actor, a far cry from his past in the aforementioned Twilight films and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which combined to make approximately 47 gazillion dollars (if our math is correct).

With upcoming roles in The Batman and Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Tenet, Pattinson looks like he’s veering back into the world of blockbusters. He revealed in the Variety interview that he’d met with Marvel in the early casting stage of Guardians of the Galaxy, but apparently it didn’t go anywhere.

He said he was always intrigued by the character of Batman. “It’s actually an interesting part,” he said. “I think it’s because he doesn’t have any superpowers.”When it was first announced, prematurely, that Pattinson had been cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming film The Batman, he hadn’t even auditioned for the role yet. Perceiving this leak as a potential threat to him landing a role that he’d wanted so badly, he was furious. He thought the speculation could mean that the role would be taken off the table.

“When that thing leaked, I was f—ing furious,” Pattinson said. “Everyone was so upset. Everyone was panicking from my team. I sort of thought that had blown up the whole thing.”

Eventually, though, Pattinson landed the role, beating out a superhero veteran in Nicholas Hoult (who played the young version of Hank McCoy/Beast in the latest X-Men movies).

Little is known at this point about Pattinson’s role in The Batman or the movie itself, outside of its 2021 release date, or the fact that it will begin shooting this winter (meaning other casting news should be announced relatively soon).

It’s also too soon to tell if Pattinson’s masturbation streak will continue in The Batman, though that would certainly represent a previously unexplored aspect of Bruce Wayne.
