It was her first big public appearance since her split from Liam Hemsworth.
And Miley Cyrus wasn’t afraid to bare her soul when she took the stage during the 2019 awards held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Monday August 26.
The singer, 26, sent chills up and down audiences spines as she performed her new song Slide Away for the crowd.

Breakup ink: Cyrus debuted a new post-breakup tattoo during her appearance
While she’s known for her avant-garde outfit choices, Miley appeared stripped down as she saddled up to the microphone wearing a slinky little black dress and wet tresses.
The singer let a collection of chains fall into her cleavage and she piled on rings and bracelets to match.
Hinting at her Malibu roots and fighting spirit, Miley added a shark tooth necklace. Her makeup featured just a hint of shimmer on her lids, giving it the perfect amount a stage presence.
Miley’s sultry little black dress let her show off her tattoo collection, which included brand new break-up ink on her inner left arm.
Delicate cursive scrawl read: ‘My head was feeling scared, but My heart was feeling free,’ a lyric from the Pixies’ song The Thing.

Noir: Making things all the more dramatic, the star was lit so she appeared in black and white
Heartbreak: ‘Move on, we’re not 17 / I’m not who I used to be,’ Cyrus sang, continuing: ‘You say that everything changed / You’re right, we’re grown now’
Hear me roar! Cyrus proved her vocal prowess as she belted out the song

Ahead of her performance Miley was seen backstage besides her new flame Kaitlynn Carter, who she was first seen locking lips with earlier this month during a romantic Italian vacation.
Carter, who is in the midst of her own split with Brody Jenner, tried to keep a low profile, donning a big blazer over a white tee shirt and blue jeans as she escorted her new gal pal.
While the couple skipped the red carpet and did not take any seats in the audience, they were seen sharing a kiss backstage.

Echoing the song’s message of love and acceptance, a rainbow arched over the back of the stage while holograms of the song’s key lyrics popped across the stage.
T. Swift sent her point home as the words ‘Equality Act’ spanned across the screens as she closed the song.
