Every week is a busy week when it comes to Disney news. To help you keep up with all of the updates coming out of Walt Disney World and other Disney resorts, here’s WDWNT’s weekly recap of the Disney news from August 19-25!

  • We learned that there’s big plans underway for the showstopping spectaculars across Walt Disney World, including a new firework show and dance party planned for Magic Kingdom, a Rivers of Light Kite Show at Animal Kingdom, and a daytime World Showcase Lagoon Show at Epcot
  • New dates have been announced for Disney After Hours events at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom through March 2020

Walt Disney Studios Movies

The Walt Disney Studios panel at D23 took place on Saturday, giving us an exciting first look at upcoming movies, including new artwork, announcements and details. Check out our recap below…

  • A new poster, character art and details were revealed for Disney/Pixar’s Onward
  • New details and photos were shown for the upcoming live-action Mulan
  • Disney’s newest animated feature will be Raya and the Last Dragon, which was announced with a cast and some stunning artwork
  • Plot details, a new poster, new song and a casting announcement was made for Frozen 2
  • Black Panther II was announced, for a 2022 release date
  • An incredible new poster was revealed for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  • A new franchise logo was revealed for Avatar, along with the announcements of sequels due in 2021 and 2023
  • Another new poster was released for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
  • We got our first look as Emma Stone as Cruella De Vil, which was announced for a 2021 release
  • New details emerged, including character art, a cast announcement and score details for Disney/Pixar’s Soul
  • The full cast and new costumes were revealed for the upcoming Marvel Studios’ The Eternals
Raya and the Last Dragon is the newest animation to be announced by the Walt Disney Studios

Disney+

A hugely impressive lineup of new shows and movies for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service was announced during their panel at the D23 Expo this weekend. Exciting announcements and releases for the channel include:

  • A cast member documentary series titled One Day At Disney (this announcement was the much-hyped “Secret Walt Disney Company Project”)
  • The reprise of Ewan McGregor as the title role in Obi-Wan Kenobi
  • A series of unscripted variety shorts featuring our favorites in Muppets Now
  • Noelle, a new holiday movie starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader
  • Hilary Duff will be returning for a reboot of Lizzie McGuire
  • Phineas and Ferb will be returning for their second movie: Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe
  • New Marvel series Moon Knight, She-Hulk and Ms.Marvel, as well as What If…?, Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision
  • The return of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series
  • We also got to see the first-ever trailers for the “live-action” Lady and the Tramp, Star Wars’ The Mandalorian, and Noelle
  • New details were released about the Monsters At Work series
  • It was confirmed that Avengers: Endgame will be available for streaming on the service
  • New posters were released for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, The Mandalorian, and The World According to Jeff Goldblum
  • It was confirmed that one single account will allow for up to four streams at once, on up to ten devices
