Having made her official debut at San Diego’s 2019 Comic Con this weekend, Angelina Jolie has already cemented the approval of Marvel fans everywhere. Now, the actor and humanitarian has confirmed she’ll be taking on the role of Thena, opposite Richard Madden.

Jolie was joined by a stellar cast, including Madden (who plays Icarus), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lia McHugh (Sprite) and Don Lee (Gilgamesh) – and Natalie Portman, who is set to play the first female Thor. The Eternals revolves around a race of superpowered immortals who dominated planet Earth over 35,000 years ago.

Directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Chloé Zhao, the role of Thena will see Jolie play an Eternal who has super strength, speed and stamina. “I’m going to work 10 times harder, because I think what it means to be a part of the MCU, what it means to be an Eternal, to be a part of this family – I know what we all need to do, we have all read the script, we all know what the task ahead is, and we know what you deserve, so we are all going to be working very, very hard,” Jolie said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The career move adds another achievement to Jolie’s incredible CV. In recent years, the actor has not only written and directed a number of acclaimed films, such as Unbroken, she’s carried out many philanthropic projects, including helping refugees with the UN, too. In YouGov’s annual study of people we most admire, Jolie is listed third (Michelle Obama knocked her off the top spot).

The Eternals is set to hit cinemas in November 2020. Watch this space.
