At 10AM Pacific Time, the Los Angeles Film Critics will throw their hat into the ring. Although at this point, there aren’t going to be many surprises. They might toss out a surprise or two, but by and large we know what the critics think, what they like and what they don’t like. What we don’t know is what the industry likes. Not yet anyway. We’ll get a small hint when the SAG awards announce their nominees Wednesday. That will be the first big consensus vote. Roughly 2,000 randomly selected SAG/AFTRA members will choose their idea of the best acting of the year.

The critics portion is about over – their consensus is Roma, First Reformed, The Favourite, Beale Street. That’s pretty much the films they’re circling as the year’s best, with stragglers here and there like Paddington 2 or the random female directed film no one can seem to agree on.

We’ll wait it out today to see what Los Angeles has to say but for the most part, this part of the story’s ending has already been written. The only way things will dramatically shift is if LA picks something outside the realm of what we already know, which they probably won’t.
