LAFD is fighting a blaze threatening two acres surrounding the area and its iconic Griffith Observatory.
A brush fire is threatening the area of Griffith Park in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Fire Department declared on Tuesday afternoon.
“LAFD ground and air response to approximately 2 acres of grass and light vegetation burning northwest of the Griffith Observatory; light wind; fire,” LAFD tweeted, noting the spread of the fire at 2:09 p.m. PT.
A subsequent tweet provided more information and gave the blaze a name: “The #brushfire #wildfire now burning in the southeast section of #GriffithPark just NW of the #GriffithObservatory in the City of #LosAngeles is known as the: #GriffithParkFire.”
Griffith Park and the Griffith Observatory are among the most popular destinations in Los Angeles, providing hiking with scenic views of the cityscape below and the iconic art-deco building of the observatory itself.
Opened in 1935, the Griffith Observatory was featured prominently in the 1955 James Dean film Rebel Without a Cause, helping solidify the property as an internationally recognizable icon of Los Angeles.
A request for comment from LAFD was not immediately returned.
