With only three new Amazon Original TV shows set to come our way in July, Amazon is relying more than usual on newly added films to keep its subscribers entertained. So it’s just as well that an impressive number of these July film additions are genuine classics.
Before getting to those, though, let’s quickly cover off the three new Amazon Original shows. Debuting first, on July 13, is Comicstaan, a 9-episode series that ‘brings together seven of the biggest comedians in India.’ This will be shown in 4K but not, it seems, HDR.
July 24 marks the debut of the fourth season of Tumble Leaf, bringing pre-schoolers more HD adventures of Fig the blue fox.
The most high profile new series from Amazon, though, is Eat.Race.Win. This takes a behind the scenes look at the Tour de France from the perspective of Tour chef Hannah Grant. Set to debut on July 27, Eat.Race.Win will be available in 4K and HDR.
Those classic movies I mentioned are numerous enough to take care of a good number of July’s long evenings. Provided, of course, that you haven’t seen them all already. And that you’re not afraid of a bit of gore and some serious scares.
My personal top two picks are Angel Heart and Mulholland Drive. The first sees a brilliant Mickey Rourke playing a detective investigating a series of occult-based murders and running into a rather more daunting adversary than anyone could have expected. Mulholland Drive, meanwhile, sees master of the bizarre David Lynch exploring the dark side of Hollywood in one of his best films.
The ‘laugh a minute’ theme continues with impressive recent scarefest A Quiet Place, classic 2000 thriller American Psycho, 2007 serial killer drama, Zodiac (from director David Fincher) and also the original Jaws.
Dead Man Walking and Clint Eastwood’s controversial but quietly compelling Gran Torino deserve an honorable mention on the classic ‘misery manifest’, too.
Lightening the mood about as much as a mood can ever be lightened is classic comedy Blazing Saddles. Mel Brooks’ brilliantly ‘broad’ satire of Hollywood’s view of the Wild West has more laugh out loud moments than arguably any other comedy – bar, maybe, Monty Python and The Holy Grail.
Other movies well worth your time on Amazon’s new additions list include Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, cult hit V For Vendetta, Witness, and, if you’re feeling nostalgic, 1967 classic The Graduate, 1961’s Breakfast At Tiffany’s and the ode to 1980s fashion that is Pretty In Pink.
With all this good stuff to keep you going, there really is no excuse for deciding to watch the also newly arrived on Amazon Twilight series and Justice League on HBO. Right?
Here, organized by date, is the full list of new films and shows coming to Amazon and its ‘channels’ in July.
