Lifestyle choices must be part of our health policy

It seems to me that the reasons behind the prime minister’s announcement of an extra £20 billion for the NHS were entirely political. Similarly, I can see the SNP decrying the paltry sum that Scotland will be allocated and using this as a stick with which to prod Westminster. I don’t care about the reasons, political or otherwise; let them bash it out.

Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, has stated that more funding is required because people continue to live longer, but not — and this is key — necessarily healthier lives. As a doctor who advocates lifestyle medicine as a mandatory inclusion in daily prescribing, I agree wholeheartedly.
