Reader question: The Nice As New resale shop in Appleton on Casaloma Drive is closing? I believe it was slated to close about a year ago or so but ended up staying open. I thought I saw store closing/sale signs on their windows last time I drove by. I love that store so hope I am wrong.
Answer: You’re right. The Nice as New consignment store is closing at 1731 N. Casaloma Drive in Grand Chute.
It has closing signs posted in its windows and closing specials on its Facebook page.
“We have plenty of consignors but not enough sales,” reads one post.
Owner Deke DeByle said his two other stores, in Wausau and Stevens Point, remain open and are fine.
“We failed to launch in Appleton,” he said. “There’s a lot of competition in Appleton.”
He said he’s also seeing big generational shifts in consumers’ shopping habits.
“Baby Boomers were recreational shoppers, and they’re not buying as much as they did even five years ago. Millennials aren’t replacing them. They’re minimalists in their lifestyles and they buy less.”
He decided to close this store in 2016 because it was not producing adequate sales, but then reversed that decision when consignors and customers encouraged him to keep it open.
“A lot of people pledged their support. That was nice at the time, but it didn’t really last,” he said.
The store’s closure date depends on how long it takes to sell off merchandise. He said there’s a lot in the store right now.
“It will probably be around the end of August.”
He’s seeking tenants to lease the space after the store closes.
