Reader question: For decades, we have gone to the Wrightstown American Legion Club on Friday night for fish. The last two weeks the sign out front says “closed.” We have heard rumors, but wonder what really is going on and if they will be opening again soon.
Answer: Friday night fish fries at this American Legion post could be ending for good, a casualty of staffing shortages plaguing lots of restaurants and lower-paying retail businesses.
There will be no Friday night fish fry until further notice at this post. It’s called the Urban Klister American Legion Post 436 at 924 Main St. in Wrightstown.
“I’m short of cooks in the kitchen,” said manager Butch Van Rossum. “I have to have four. I have one for sure and one on call.”
He said the popular fish fry has been around since 1957 or 1958, but with the liquor license renewal coming up at the end of the month and bills to pay, he said he has to make a decision soon on the fish fry’s future.
And if the fish fry goes, he said he might have to put the building up for sale.
“I’m in a hurting situation,” Van Rossum said. “If by the end of the month I don’t have any more cooks, it’s over.”
