Dreams really do come true for Rachel Bloom. Not only did the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator/star return for a second year in the row as the Tony Awards’ backstage host, but Bloom also successfully commissioned a T-shirt of legendary Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim smoking a joint to wear for the occasion.
Bloom put out a call out on Twitter for a custom-designed shirt, and wore the winning design from Ali Segel on the red carpet, explaining to USA TODAY why she commissioned such a specifically hilarious piece.
“I’m a massive fan of Stephen Sondheim and he is my favorite musical theater writer. And there’s a couple of things that are fascinating about him, and one that he’s talked about — I read numerous books about him — is that he has vices, he drinks, he’ll smoke a j,” she said. “And I think that that’s really funny because no one talks about that. He’s kind of seen as this flawless God in the musical theater world. I think it’s really great that he’s actually quite human and also it’s pretty rock n’ roll.”
“You know, I was looked on as a dork for loving musical theater, and so the fact that like Stephen Sondheim can like smoke a fat j now and then, like, that feels pretty rock n’ roll,” she continued. “Like we talk about rock stars. Not saying the drugs are what make you rock n’ roll, but you know, it’s legal in California now, so I can kind of say it without getting in trouble.”
