Two classic movies from master directors of suspense and spectacle, and an iconic 1950s depiction of youth rebellion, are the leads for the Cleveland Orchestra’s 2018-19 “At the Movies” series starting this fall at Severance Hall.
The popular series, which has run for seven seasons, features film screenings projected above the Severance Hall stage, with music performed live. The series is sponsored by PNC Bank.
Kicking off the season, on Friday, Oct. 26 — just in time for Halloween — is “The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog,” a 1920 silent thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Acclaimed organist Todd Wilson will improvise music for the film, which follows the hunt for a Jack the Ripper-esque serial killer.
The second film in the series, on Friday, March 1, 2019, is “Rebel Without a Cause,” director Nicholas Ray’s landmark drama starring James Dean, Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood. The Cleveland Orchestra will perform the film’s groundbreaking score by Leonard Rosenman.
Ending the series, on Sunday, April 28, 2019, is Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” with the orchestra performing the memorable John Williams score to the science fiction film that packs a significant emotional pull from its family story. (Williams, who has a record 50 Academy Award nominations, provided one of the thrills of the just-ended Cleveland Orchestra season when he conducted the orchestra in a program of his movie music on April 8.)
Subscriptions for the 2018-19 “At the Movies” series are on sale now. They start at $78 for a three-movie package, a savings of up to 20% off individual ticket prices, the orchestra said. Tickets are available at the Severance Hall Ticket Office, online at clevelandorchestra.com, or by calling 216-231-1111 or 1-800-686-1141.
