The Susquehanna Twp.School of the Arts (SOA) program presented their final works for the 2018 school year Friday, May 18, 2018. The SOA Showcase featured a visual arts exhibit of student works to include photography, drawings, and paintings. Students in the Performing Arts class performed several one act skits. The School of Fashion Design closed out the program with runway show featuring award winning student designers.
Most recently, The STHS SOA Fashion Design students were invited to attend the Artes de Cuba at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC to meet famous Cuban fashion designer, Celia Ledon. Ms. Ledon engaged and interacted with the students and also conducted a master class. Students wore their own fashion creations to the center and had the opportunity to help Ms. Ledon with creating her exhibition on site.
The SOA program is one-of-a-kind and has resulted in great success amongst graduates. For six consecutive years, the STSD Fashion Design program, taught by Ricky Andries, won gold keys for the Regional Scholastic Arts and Writing Competition, which is held annually. - Gold Key Winners: Darnell Colston and Hannah Kurtz for fashion designs submitted.
- Silver Key Winners: Darnell Colston for fashion design and Chinh Tran for visual arts.
- Honorable Mention Winners: Darnell Colston, Hanna Kurtz, and Bruce Morris for fashion design.
This year, Darnell Colston became the first STHS School of Fashion Design student to receive Scholastic Art and Writing Silver Medal for fashion design. The design was selected out of nearly 350,000 works of art and writing that were submitted and places his work with an alumni class that includes the likes of Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, and Joyce Carol Oates.
The SOA is a unique, forward-thinking arts magnet program for students interested in the fields of fashion design, performing arts, and visual arts.
