And the winner is…
Maddie Poppe! On Monday evening, the 19-year-old Iowa native was crowned the season 16 winner of American Idol.

This wasn’t necessarily surprising as, throughout the competition, Miz Poppe was known for her unique voice and artistic ability. However, her win was certainly a bittersweet one, since she beat out boyfriend Caleb Lee Hutchinson!
The victor and the runner up confirmed their romance amid the last 15 minutes of the singing competition. It was Mr. Hutchinson who spilled the beans, as he told host Ryan Seacrest:
“Well Maddie is my pal and I’ve known her since the beginning of Hollywood week. And she actually happens to be my girlfriend.”

Judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie were totally stunned by their romantic announcement. Case in point, the Swish Swish singer reacted by spinning in her chair multiple times.
Hey, at least Caleb Lee isn’t walking away empty handed. He’s won L-O-V-E!! Not to mention, the twosome were gifted with a free trip to Disney‘s Aulani resort in Hawaii. No WONDER they sang Israel Kamakawiwo’ole‘s Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
Hutchinson appears to be genuinely happy for his girlfriend, as he took to Twitter and posted:
