It may sound like basic knowledge—maintain physical activity, eat whole foods, get a good night sleep, manage your stress, and pay attention to your mental and emotional health—but health experts say if you don’t know why you’re improving your lifestyle, you may struggle to make healthy choices. “The first day I talk about their “why” with them, and you see puzzled faces in the background because they don’t know what their why is,” explained Sarah Mitchell, a health and wellness coordinator at Lee Health’s Healthy Life Center in Cape Coral.
Knowing your why can actually help you stay motivated to improve your lifestyle. “Everyone that walks in this door and calls me about this program is looking for some type of weight loss, a number on the scale to change, clothes to fit better, but ultimately what they discover through this eight weeks is other things need to be happening in their healthy lifestyle in order for it to be healthy,” said Mitchell.
The lifestyle, exercise and improvement program is taught in a one-on-one setting or in a group setting. The eight-week program helps participants set lifestyle goals and ways to reach them. “It might be that the person is not getting enough sleep to create enough energy to actually do the physical activity that they are trying to do,” said Mitchell.
Dietitians and wellness coaches will also meet with participants to discuss nutrition changes and explain different exercises, like interval training and yoga, to improve their activity and stress management. “We do core work. We do resistance training with and without equipment so they can do it anywhere,” she said.
Giving them a better understanding of how to be healthy. “They walk out of the door with awareness of what they are doing on a daily routine and more importantly what they’re not doing on a daily routine,” said Mitchell.
In addition to learning how to improve their lifestyle, participants are also finding their “why.” A program aimed at helping people improve their overall health.
