Shopgirl: Straw handbags say 'summer'

By Gracie ShepherdColumnist

Nothing says summer quite like a straw handbag, and it’s a great way to add some texture and color to your look. There are plenty of great straw bags on the market right now, running the gamut of price points.

Zara has a straw bag that is kind of like a little box with handles, and amazing embroidery detailing in bright colors. There’s also a red lining that adds even more of a pop of color, and it’s at the Zara price point (this bag is less than $60).

If you want something that’s a little bit more of an investment piece, Seychelles’ Nannacay tote is in a size perfect for anything from vacationing to the farmer’s market and has cute tassel and pom-pom detailing along the edge of the tote’s opening. The woven straw is in a neutral shade, but the tassels and pom-poms are in every color of the rainbow.

If you’re not quite ready to invest in straw, Bershka has an adorable, simple straw bag that comes in both a poppy pink and a clean white. There is a ton of texture and detail in the way the straw is woven, but the monochrome keeps it very sleek and modern. The best part – this bag is less than $30.

WHAT’S NEW. Are you still playing HQ, the live trivia game? If so, there’s a new feature that may make it even more fun for you and your friends.

This new feature is called “Friends on HQ” and currently is being tested in the U.K. but will be released in the U.S. soon. You just add “friends” within the app, and as you play the game, you can see who of your friends are playing the game currently and then how your friends are faring as the game progresses.

According to an interview between TechCrunch and an HQ spokesperson, this is just a part of the new features HQ intends to add to make the game even more social.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE. Do you ever wonder what exactly the buzz is about social media? Maybe you have a Facebook account, but you never use it and always get frustrated when you do log in from time to time.

The Columbia County Library is holding training sessions for Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram to help you best take advantage of what these social media outlets have to offer.

On May 24, you can learn more at a free session. The Facebook session is from 10 a.m. to noon; the Snapchat/Instagram session is from 1:30-3:30 p.m. All you need to do is call (706) 863-1946, ext. 4 to register.
