The Most Honest Celebrity Quotes on Motherhood From Charlize Theron, Kim Kardashian, Tyra Banks & More

Mother’s Day is a joyous day of celebrations for all the hard-working mamas out there.

Having a new bundle of joy and raising a child comes with a slew of parenting challenges that most women don’t talk about. But, despite being blessed with some help, mothers have felt completely overwhelmed and haven’t been shy about expressing it.

ET is rounding up 10 honest quotes on motherhood that celebrities have shared in the past.

Earlier this year, the 42-year-old actress chatted with ET about the unglamorous life of motherhood.

“I think there is an element to being a parent that is somewhat assumed, and if it doesn’t go by that assumption, then you’re just automatically a terrible parent,” she continued. “I think the biology of what happens to a woman’s body after she has a baby — it’s different for each and every single woman — but I don’t think we acknowledge enough of just how different it is and that’s OK. It doesn’t mean anything other than you’re going through a stage, and you will get on the other side of it, and then things change.”

The America’s Next Top Model creator, who welcomed her son, York Banks Asla, in January of 2017, got candid about how motherhood has been a learning experience.

“Just how tired [I am],” Banks told ET in Nov. 2017 of the biggest surprise about being a working mom. “I’m tired right now because I was up all night. He was waking up all night last night, and [needed a] bottle at 5:30 this morning.”

“I do have a lot of help, but I don’t have help all the time,” she added. “So those moments when I’m like, in it and suffering, I’m like, ‘This is what I’m supposed to be doing as a mama.'”

The Duchess of Cambridge recently welcomed her third baby with Prince William, but in 2017 the future queen revealed that motherhood can be “lonely.”

“Yes, it is lonely at times and you do feel quite isolated,” she said during a visit to the Global Academy in London to talk about parents and mental health. “But, so many other mothers are going through exactly what you are going through… It is being brave enough, like you obviously were, to reach out to those around you.”

A month before that, Kate opened up about at times feeling overwhelmed.

“Personally, becoming a mother has been such a rewarding and wonderful experience,” she shared at a charity event in March of 2017. “However, at times it has also been a huge challenge. Even for me, who has support at home that most mothers do not.”

“Nothing can really prepare you for the sheer, overwhelming experience of what it means to become a mother,” she continued. “It’s full of complex emotions of joy, exhaustion, love, and worry, all mixed together.”

4. Kim Kardashian West

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, who shares three children with husband Kanye West, knows that it can’t be all about her now that she’s had kids.

“There can be ups and downs with kids but no matter what, I always learn so much from them,” she said on her website in mid 2017. “Being a mom is the most important job I have.”

“My priorities changed when I had kids. It’s not about me anymore,” Kardashian continued. “After North was born, I wanted to be there and make memories together that we would share forever. It really makes you realize how precious life is.”

Back in November of 2017, the model and entrepreneur told ET that her family always comes first, but has to sometimes sacrifice free-time to focus on her own business.

“It gets a little tricky,” Alves said about trying to take care of work when her husband Matthew McConaughey is working. “When he goes to work, we all go. So we have been doing that since even before kids… But for me, it gets a little crazy. So I have to do quick 24-hour trips. Like, fly in the morning, fly out that night or the next morning. A lot of Skype for business. And then it gets tricky when we’re in places that don’t get reception. You find ways, you get creative and you find people around that you like.”

The model has dealt with people scrutinizing her for the way she dresses as a mother to a 5-year-old son. But that’s not stopping her from being able to be who she is.

“Moms are allowed to be sexy,” she told ET earlier this week. “We are allowed to still have fun. We are allowed to go out at night when our kids are asleep and still have a good time. Our lives are not over because we have children.”

7. Adele

Leave it to the “Hello” singer to say what everyone’s thinking. After giving birth to her first child, a boy named Angelo, Adele kept things real and shared just how exhausting being a mother is.

“It’s f**king hard. I thought it would be easy,” she said in an interview with i-D magazine in 2015. “‘Everyone f**king does it, how hard can it be?’ Ohhhh…”

“I had no idea. It is hard but it’s phenomenal. It’s the greatest thing I ever did. He makes me be a d**khead, and he makes me feel young and there’s nothing more grounding than a kid kicking off and refusing to do what you’re asking of them. It used to be that my own world revolved around me, but now it has to revolve around him.”

The Bad Moms star echoed Adele’s sentiments, telling Marie Claire in an interview last year, “What motherhood shows you is how selfless you can get,” she says. “I’m ragged tired. Who cares? My kids are healthy, I’m happy.”

The mother of two told ET in 2017 that she discovered that motherhood seems to be the same, no matter what world you come from.

“Honestly, I found no difference between celebrity moms and non-celebrity moms,” she noted. “We all face the same issues. There’s no easier way to do mommyhood, you know? It’s rough, it’s amazing, it’s every adjective you can think of.”
