“You get to watch Han Solo become who he is,” Ehrenreich, who plays Han about 10 years before the events of 1977’s Star Wars, tells PEOPLE.

The L.A. native, 28, was discovered by Steven Spielberg after appearing in a friend’s Bat Mitzvah video at 14.

“The first time I walked onto the Millennium Falcon,” he says, “it was like ‘Oh, this is really Star Wars.’ ”
