WWE wrestler Kane (Glenn Jacobs) sparks worldwide buzz with Knox election results

It’s safe to say a Knox County primary election has never before been international news, but the strong showing by Glenn Jacobs, aka WWE wrestler Kane, in Tuesday’s primary for Knox County mayor, has been trending worldwide on Google and Twitter.

Social media being what it is, there’s a lot of misinformation floating around out there – this was a primary election, so Jacobs must still win the general election in August against Democrat Linda Haney; also, this is the Knox County mayoral race, not the Knoxville city mayoral race.

But nevermind all that. The party is on!

Thanks to everyone who helped win this historic victory!! The people who cast a ballot for me, my great team, my wonderful volunteers. Looking forward to VICTORY in the general election!

The sports world is behind Jacobs – including Kane fans, overall wrestling fans, and of course the WWE itself.

And the media have been all-in – from the fan-sourced highlighthub …

… to the venerable standby Sports Illustrated.

Even University of Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano sneaked into the social-media buzz with a Twitter post, though he doesn’t have that Knoxville/Knox County and primary/general election thing straight. (We’ll give him a pass for that …)

What’s next for Jacobs?

First of all, election workers are expected to review provisional ballots this week, and on May 21, the Knox County Election Commission will certify the results. If Jacobs is declared the Republican candidate, he will set his sights on Haney as his August 2 general election foe.

And if he wins in August, expect to see another round of social-media celebration.
