Monday night’s Avengers: Infinity War world premiere in Hollywood was, according to directors Anthony and Joe Russo, the first time “anybody” got to see their movie.
“It’s happening right now, tonight: The first time the cast is seeing this film, the first time the crew is seeing this film,” Joe Russo said before lights dimmed and a packed Dolby Theatre screened the 19th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
So what were fans and journalists’ initial reactions to seeing the movie that combines heroes from the previous Avengers, Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange films?
The general consensus was that Infinity War is a huge, explosive and unpredictable film that should not be spoiled. (“Please help us protect the secrets of the film: Thanos demands your silence,” Anthony Russo said at the premiere.)
Filmmaker Kevin Smith said he “LOVED” the “gigantic” masterpiece.
I am overwhelmed. The movie is epic beyond compare. LOVED it. My legs are still shaking. It’s a gigantic @Marvel masterpiece. So much to say but I’ll stay Silent Bob til Monday so as not to slip in spoilers. Suffice to say it’s gonna be a looooong year until @Avengers 4… pic.twitter.com/aHnsgj5MK0

Uproxx entertainment writer Mike Ryan said it had plenty of “‘chill down the spine” great moments,” but ended in an unsatisfying way.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR has like ten legit “chill down the spine” great moments. But it’s for sure the first half of a two part movie and I left a little unsatisfied/frustrated, maybe by design … at least that’s how I feel right now three hours later.

Dr. Strange director Scott Derrickson dubbed Infinity War “a colossal high impact action movie with lots of great humor and a spectacularly unpredictable ending.”

Collider editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub said, “Jaw on ground.”
Jaw on ground. You are not ready for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. All you have to know is AVOID ALL SPOILERS! Seriously. Go in knowing as little as possible. The @Russo_Brothers did the impossible. Wow. pic.twitter.com/noKZ5cQWdc

The Verge film editor Tasha Robinson said fans of Captain America: Civil War “will go nuts for this film.”
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is basically CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR times 20, except with less hero-on-hero fighting. I think people who loved the airport fight in CIVIL WAR like I did will go nuts for this film, and people who were bored will be 20 times as bored here. #InfinityWar

ComicBook.com contributor Brandon Davis called the film “enormous” and an “absolute roller coaster (that’s) unlike anything that has every come before it.”
Avenger: Infinity War is a spectacle. It’s enormous. It’s bigger than anyone is ready for and it’s an absolute roller coaster.
It’s dark. It’s fun. It’s heavy. It’s thrilling. Infinity War is unlike anything that has ever come before it.

Deadpool creator Robert Liefeld said the movie had the “greatest super hero battles ever put to film!!”
