The interview earned gushing praise from Maddow’s fans, but it wasn’t a ratings winner, falling to second place behind Fox News Channel’s Hannity, which was the highest-rated cable news show Thursday night with a total audience of 3.5 million viewers. Maddow was second with 3.4 million, and CNN’s Anderson Cooper finished third with 1.1 million. Hannity also won among viewers 25-54, the demographic coveted by advertisers, with an average audience of 733,000. Maddow was second with 671,000 and Anderson Cooper third (388,000).
According to ratings data released by Nielsen, Fox News Channel easily won prime time Thursday, with an average audience of 3.0 million viewers (MSNBC was second with 2.6 million, and CNN finished third with 1.1 million). Fox News also won among viewers 25-54 (622,000), ahead of MSNBC (523,000) and CNN (348,000).
The Comey interview comes as Maddow and Hannity fight for the title of cable news’ top host, with The Rachel Maddow Show posting its best-ever ratings in the 9 p.m. hour in March, beating Hannity among total viewers and in the demo.
A month earlier, Hannity crushed his cable competition in February, finishing first with an average audience of 3.3 million total viewers. February marked Hannity’s fifth straight month as the top-rated host in cable news. In February, Maddow dropped to third place behind FNC’s Tucker Carlson.
In the first quarter of 2018, Hannity and Maddow took a split decision, with Hannity winning among total viewers with 3.196 million (to Maddow’s 2.993 million) but Maddow taking first place among viewers 25-54 with 664,000 to Hannity’s 662,000.
