QMG foundation tells cancer to 'buzz off'

Local event seeks to raise funds for area cancer patients

The Quincy Medical Group (QMG) Healthcare Foundation is presenting its inaugural Buzz Off Cancer. The mission of Buzz Off Cancer is to provide financial support to local cancer patients while bringing awareness to the emotional and physical impact of the disease.

The event will take on June 30, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Quincy University. Event organizers, Racheal Raleigh and Jen Roberts, are seeking participants who are willing to “buzz off” their hair as a way to raise funds for a good cause.

Raleigh and Roberts both work at QMG.

Through a marketing project, where they spoke to and heard the stories of patients and QMG physicians, they were inspired to take action to not only raise awareness but to help ease the financial toll of cancer.

“Each and every one of them discussed how their illness had impacted their ability to work. That led me to wonder how they do it,” Roberts said. “Physically fighting cancer is hard enough. I can’t fathom how difficult the financial burden is on top of that.”

Rebecca Dedert has a unique perspective on cancer. Not only does she work as an RN for QMG Cancer Care, but she is also a breast cancer survivor and will participate as a “shavee” at the event.

“About a year after working at QMG in 2017, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It became very scary to suddenly become the patient,” she said. “It’s important to me to participate in Buzz Off Cancer because now it’s my turn to show my patients and those fighting their battles I am committed to their journey just as so many committed to helping me on my journey.”

Showing those impacted by cancer that their community is behind them is what makes Buzz Off Cancer so special, said Raleigh.

“This event will not only raise funds and awareness. It will also allow community members to show their support, bring hope, and provide a meaningful experience for patients and their loved ones.”
