Reader question: At the Fox River Mall, I use the Macy’s entrance facing the large parking lot. I was struck by how shabby, dirty and uncared-for that side of the building appears and most especially the entrance, where chunks of the facade have fallen off and have never been repaired or replaced. Not only is it a shameful eyesore, but it could also endanger customers using that entrance if the wrong piece should fall off at the wrong time.
I called the mall office and talked with (senior general manager) John Burgland. He said they’re aware of the problem, they’ve talked with Macy’s, but no action has been taken. Apparently, since Macy’s owns their building and the plot of land it sits on, the mall has no control over them.
I attempted to call the interim manager at Macy’s but I got an outgoing message saying she’s out of town. How can we get them to remedy the situation?
Answer: I took a look and saw that Macy’s south and west-facing entrances have deep cracks and missing chunks of stone at the base of the arches around its doorways.
The retailer does own its own building at the mall, so I contacted Macy’s regional spokeswoman Andrea Schwartz.
Her response:
“I shared your inquiry with Macy’s facilities department. They are aware of the limestone’s condition,” she said. “Weather, salt and snow removal equipment have all played a part in the deterioration. We are currently working on this and had a structural engineer at the site last week. Please know we are aware and working on a solution.”
Macy’s is not the only anchor that owns, rather than leases, its Fox River Mall building and is responsible for its upkeep.
Sears and Target both own their own stores at the mall, according to Outagamie County records.
County records show JC Penney’s property is owned by one of its subsidiaries, JC Penney Prop. Inc. out of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Younkers’ building is owned by a third party, the Bloch Family 2005 Partnership.
