Nicolas Cage has opened up about his Ghost Rider movies, released back in 2007 and 2012.
Cage played vigilante Johnny Blaze in both the original movie and the sequel. The former currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 26%, while the latter has a score of 17%.
It seems the critics weren’t the only ones who didn’t enjoy the Marvel movies, as detailed by Cage in a new interview.
Speaking to JoBlo, Cage says the he and his writer David S Goyer envisioned a grittier, R-rated version of the films.
“Ghost Rider was a movie that always should’ve been an R-rated movie,” Cage explained. “David Goyer had a brilliant script which I wanted to do with David, and for whatever reason they just didn’t let us make the movie.”
Cage continued to say that the character should be played on screen again but not by him.
“That movie is a still a movie that should be made, not with me obviously, but it should be an R-rated movie,” he said.
“Heck, Deadpool was R-rated and that did great. Ghost Rider was designed to be a scary superhero with an R-rating and edge, and they just didn’t have it worked out back then.”
In other Marvel news, Star Wars actor John Boyega has revealed that he’s held talks with Marvel bosses about a potential role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Boyega, best known for his role as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, revealed the surprise talks during an appearance at AwesomeCon over the weekend.
The moment in question came when a fan asked if Boyega was open to the prospect of portraying Marvel’s iconic vampire hunter Blade – famously portrayed by Wesley Snipes.
As it happens, he thinks that the chance to portray Blade would be akin to a “spit in the face of Wesley [Snipes]”, although he divulged that “meetings with Marvel about potentially taking on a Marvel superhero” HAVE taken place.
