Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan separated months before their announcement on Monday, but to the public, there were few signs of trouble.
So how did they manage to keep their split a secret?
While a source tells PEOPLE the Magic Mike star has moved out of the Los Angeles family home he shared with his wife and their daughter Everly, the former couple continued to spend time together in the month leading up to their announcement.
Tatum and Dewan most recently attended the Kids’ Choice Awards together with their daughter and also shared cute snaps of a recent pool and face painting day in March.
And just hours before news of their split broke, the actress was spotted wearing her wedding ring at a morning yoga class in Studio City, California. Tatum was also spotted wearing his wedding band while at dinner in March.
But while they may have appeared as happy as ever, a source tells PEOPLE increased time apart eventually took a toll on their relationship.
“When Everly was younger, Channing and Jenna used to spend a lot of family time together,” says a source. “For the past year, they seem to have spent less time together.”
Buzz about a split began when Dewan attended the annual Vanity Fair Oscars after-party solo, but she told ET at the bash that Tatum was on daddy duty and “so happy to have a night off.”
Earlier this year, Tatum spent time in Hawaii while Dewan stayed home with Everly. He’s also been hard at work on a number of upcoming movie projects, including writing and producing the X-Men spinoff Gambit.
“Channing is often out of town,” adds the source. “Jenna takes care of Everly’s daily schedule.”
A second source tells PEOPLE the couple eventually started to grow apart.
“This has been a long time coming,” one insider says. “Like any marriage, they’ve had their ups and downs over the years but they really started to grow apart within the last year.”
On Monday, the actors, both 37, announced the split in a joint statement exclusive to PEOPLE, saying, “We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple.” They added, “There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision — just two best-friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible.”
Dewan and Tatum started dating shortly after they met on the set of their 2006 movie Step Up and tied the knot in 2009.
