Is The Weeknd's New Album About Selena Gomez? Here's What Fans Think Of the Lyrics

New music from The Weeknd is out just in time for the weekend — and it’s got the fan-based rumor mill running overtime, searching for connections between his new songs and his break-up with Selena Gomez.

After subtly teasing the release of new music via a billboard in London on Thursday, the 28-year-old Canadian GRAMMY winner dropped a six-song EP titled My Dear Melancholy on Thursday night.

The Weeknd’s new music comes just months after his high-profile split from the “Bad Liar” singer, and several fans took to social media after the songs came out to point out how many of lyrics sound like they could be related to their failed relationship.

We gotta thank Selena Gomez for making The Weeknd go through the pain that he did that caused him to make this album lol

On the surface, several of his songs clearly paint a negative image of relationships and love in general.

In the song “Hurt You,” The Weeknd sings, “And now I know relationships my enemy/ So stay away from me/ I’m warning you/ You try to fill the void with every man you meet/ ‘Cause you’re upset with me/ I’m warning you.”

Then, lyrics in “Call Out My Name” include, “We found each other/ I helped you out of a broken place/ You gave me comfort/ But falling for you was my mistake.”

Additionally, his new track “Privilege” contains the lyrics, “Enjoy your privileged life/ ‘Cause I’m not gonna hold you through the night/ We said our last goodbyes/ So let’s just try to end it with a smile.”

It’s also been suggested that many lyrics could also be calling out Gomez (briefly) rekindling her relationship with Justin Beiber soon after she and The Weeknd called it quits.

From “Hurt You,” he sings, “When you’re with him, you close your eyes and think of me/ Just call me up again/I’ll make you weak.”

There’s even a lyric in “Call Out My Name” that fans are suggesting could be a direct reference to Gomez’ kidney transplant, which occurred a few months before the couple broke up. “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life/ Guess I was just another pitstop/ Til’ you made up your mind.”

WHEN HE SAID “I ALMOST CUT A PIECE OF MYSELF FOR YOUR LIFE” DOES THAT MEAN HE WOULD HAVE GIVEN HER HIS KIDNEY

Despite rumor and conjecture, any connection between The Weeknd’s new music and his break-up with Gomez remain unconfirmed.

On Tuesday, The Weeknd first hinted that his latest album would be coming out when he shared a screenshot of a conversation with creative director La Mar Taylor that read, “Should we drop Friday? I’m indifferent to be honest.”

Then, Thursday morning, the artist revealed the cover art for his new album, featuring a shadowed, haunting portrait of himself that seems to perfectly embody the spirt of Melancholy in the album’s title.

The release comes after the “False Alarm” singer spent the last several weeks posting vague, cryptic and unsettling Instagram posts, hinting that he was in the studio recording new music.
