Tamar Braxton just did something both drastic and liberating: She shaved her head. The singer took to Instagram on Wednesday morning, posting a video of herself sitting in a salon chair as a hairstylist buzzes off her hair with an electric razor. Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative” fittingly plays in the background and the caption reads, “finally free.”
Many of her followers filled the comments section with love and support. One user wrote, “They say a woman that cuts her hair is embarking on a new journey.” Another said, “Sometimes change is good and is necessary to start over, it takes a strong woman to do this @tamarbraxton you’re beautiful with or without!!”

She then posted another photo showing off the final results of her chop and yeah, she looked absolutely beautiful. Braxton wrote in an Instagram caption, “I’m over feeling captive to a wig, weave, people, people’s comments & opinions hell…even my OWN feelings! We can choose to stop these things from having the power and victory over us!! And for me, that starts TODAY ??♀️ #happysttamarsday”
Braxton joins a slew of celebrities including Cara Delevingne and Sanaa Lathan, who have shaved their heads in the past year. But while Delevingne and Lathan snipped their strands for film roles, Braxton’s chop has a deeper meaning. I can completely see what she means by feeling “held hostage” by her hair. There are many times where I didn’t want to work out or go swimming for fear of messing up my hairstyle. Plus, I can’t imagine being in the public eye and having people all over the world scrutinize everything about you — including your hair. Besides that, wearing protective styles like weaves and wigs for a long period of time can also cause damage to your hair. Now, I don’t know whether Braxton’s hair was damaged or not, but shaving it off and starting all over is a great opportunity to focus on the health of her natural, beautiful hair.
While hair is important, it shouldn’t define who you are, and as singer Amara La Negra previously told Allure, “You need to do what makes you feel good.” For Braxton right now, getting rid of all her hair, starting fresh, and embracing being in her own skin is what feels good. And even though this decision was simply her own, it nevertheless serves as an inspiration to other women who might like to do the same.
